Warrior Profile
Karmawatji Kumpawat was the son of Kumpaji and younger brother of Thakur Mulrajji, the Rajpurohit and Tikai of Marwar.
According to the Bahi of Thikana Tinwari, Karmawatji played a significant role in the defense of Mehrangarh Fort during the siege by Sher Shah Suri in Vikram Samvat 1600 (1543 CE). At this time, Sher Shah Suri, having advanced into Rajputana, laid siege to the fort of Jodhpur.
Karmawatji was among the chief defenders stationed inside the fort. When Sher Shah’s forces launched a full assault on Mehrangarh, the battle turned fierce. During this intense fighting, eighteen prominent nobles (sardars) sacrificed their lives to protect the fort and the sovereignty of Marwar. Karmawatji Kumpawat was one of those eighteen martyrs, demonstrating exceptional valor and loyalty.
Alongside him, another Rajpurohit warrior (grandson of damaji, name isn't provided) also attained martyrdom, highlighting the crucial role of the Rajpurohits not only as spiritual advisors but also as warriors and defenders of the state.
Karmawatji's martyrdom became a part of the collective memory of Marwar’s resistance against foreign invaders. His valor is preserved in the records of Tinwari Thikana. His sacrifice contributed to the continued recognition of the martial spirit and loyalty of the Rajpurohit clans in the history of Marwar.
