Tinwari
The Grand Double-Tazimi Thikana of Marwar
Region: Marwar
Clan: Rajpurohit (Mulrajot → Akherajot, Sewad)
Title: Thakur
Current Status: Tehsil and industrial town in Jodhpur District, Rajasthan
Thikana Tinwari is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful thikanas in the history of the Marwar state. The estate held every sovereign right of a princely estate — including double tazimi status, the prestigious sona navesh, palki honours, and authority over multiple kurabs.
According to historical tradition, Tinwari was originally a seat of Tanwar Rajputs. It was later formally granted to Damaji Harpalot Sewad by Rao Jodha, founder of Jodhpur, in recognition of Damaji’s heroic role in rescuing Bhim Chundawat and Varjang (Jodha’s uncles) and aiding Rao Jodha in the reconquest of Mandore. This event marked Tinwari’s rise as a premier and loyalist estate of Marwar.
Tinwari became the ancestral head seat of the Mulrajot branch of the Sewad Rajpurohits, and later the Akherajot sub-branch emerged from it. For over three centuries, it served as the central estate of the Akherajots, all Sewads, and Rajpurohits of Marwar.
The head of Tinwari traditionally bears the title of Thakur, commanding significant influence in courtly and military affairs.
They have 6th position in Jimni Misal in Royal Court of Jodhpur State.
Tinwari Thikana has bled in every generation for the honor and safety of Marwar, producing countless warriors, generals, and statesmen. It is known for unmatched valor and loyalty, often compared to royal lineages in stature and sacrifice.
Gangshyam Temple of Lord Vishnu, constructed by Thakur Damaji, is a marvel of medieval Rajput temple architecture.
Several Jain temples also exist, reflecting the religious inclusivity and cultural richness of the estate.
Tinwari boasts multiple fortifications, unique for a Rajpurohit thikana:
Juna Kot (Old Fort): A rare military-style fort structure in this region, believed to have been initiated by an early Thakur (exact name unconfirmed). Includes:
Jail (carceral space)
Darikhana (royal court or meeting hall)
Elephant and horse stables
Several havelis and defensive structures
Kalyan Kot: Founded by Thakur Kalyan Singh Ji
Naya Kot (New Fort): Built likely by Thakur Akheraj Ji or Thakur Daulat Singh Ji, includes extensive stables and a large residential haveli.
Pratap Singh Ji ka Kot: Constructed by Bhomia Sewad jagirdars, whose ancestors were from Badla. They gained bhom jagir in Tinwari after bravely defending the fort alongside Nagraj Ji Dalpatot against the Rathore forces of Rao Indra Singh.
Akheraj Ji Ka Thada: A sacred cremation and memorial site where cenotaphs of Thakur Akheraj Ji and other royal members of Tinwari lie.
Guman Singh Ji Chowk: A square named in honor of Thakur Guman Singh Ji Akherajot, commemorating his role and legacy in the estate.
Over the centuries, Tinwari grew not only as a political and military stronghold but also as a center of culture, administration, and commerce. Its transformation into a tehsil reflects its continued administrative relevance.
In contemporary times, Tinwari is known for:
Being a fast-developing industrial and commercial hub
Its rising population and urban structure
Historical and spiritual landmarks that draw visitors and scholars
Thikana Tinwari represents a rare blend of warrior spirit, administrative authority, religious patronage, and architectural excellence — making it one of the grandest and most decorated Rajpurohit thikanas of Rajasthan.
