Thikana Barwa, located in the Godwar region of present-day Rajasthan, was a prominent Rajpurohit jagir granted to Thakur Bahad Singh Ji Gundecha in 1328 AD. He belonged to the Gundecha branch of Rajpurohits, a lineage stemming from Thakur Acchal Singh Ji of Bera.
Barwa developed into a Patvi Thikana — a senior estate — known for its valor, architectural presence, and dharmic protection of sacred icons and temples.
Thakur Bahad Singh Ji played a key role as a military ally of:
Rana Hammir Singh, aiding in the defeat of Munja Balecha of Katargarh (Sewari) and resisting Bhil tribal forces during the Rajput resurgence in Godwar.
Rana Kshetra Singh, contributing significantly in conflicts against Mer rebels in the Godwar region.
Through these alliances, Barwa earned military distinction and strategic importance in the southern Mewar frontier.
During the reign of Thakur Nahar Singh Ji Gundecha (around 1600 V.S.), Barwa saw major architectural development:
Construction of defensive pols (gates) like:
Korka Pol
Badi Pol
Darwaja Pol
Hathi Pol
These structures reinforced Barwa’s strategic role in safeguarding the religious and cultural integrity of the region.
Barwa Thikana is known for its role in protecting sacred icons during Islamic invasions.
When temples of Braj were attacked by invaders, several devotees fled carrying murtis (idols) in different directions. One such group brought the idol of Sri Laxminarayan to Barwa.
The Sri Laxminarayan Temple was constructed under the patronage of Thakur Nahar Singh Ji Gundecha, marking Barwa as a site of spiritual refuge and temple preservation.
Additionally, the Katareshwar Mahadev Temple was constructed earlier by Thakur Bahad Singh Ji Gundecha, becoming a major Shaivite religious site for the region.
The contributions and legacy of the rulers of Barwa are preserved in:
Barwa Bahi Khata maintained by the Rao Sahebs of Gundecha Jagirdars
