Viramji Mulrajot
Viramji Mulrajot was a prominent Rajpurohit warrior and diplomat of the Mulrajot Sewad clan, affiliated with the Thikana of Tinwari in Marwar. He played a crucial role during the Mughal siege of Merta, which occurred during the reign of Emperor Akbar.
In the late 16th century, Merta was under the control of Rao Maldeo Rathore of Marwar. However, Rao Jaimal Mertiya, a powerful claimant of Merta and ally of Akbar, sought to reclaim the region. To this end, he approached Emperor Akbar under the pretense of pilgrimage (ziyārat) to Ajmer Sharif and requested military assistance to capture Merta.
Akbar responded by dispatching an imperial force led by General Sharfuddin. The Mughal army marched towards Merta and laid siege to the strategic Malkot Fort.
At the time, Merta was being defended by Jagmal Rathore and Devidas Rathore, loyal vassals of Rao Maldeo. Alongside them stood Viramji Mulrajot, representing the Rajpurohit aristocracy of Marwar. A fierce and prolonged battle ensued outside and around the fort.
In the thick of combat, Viramji Mulrajot fought valiantly beside the Rathore commanders. He attained martyrdom along with Devidas Rathore, defending the fort and their sovereign’s honor against overwhelming Mughal forces.
Viramji Mulrajot is remembered in the oral and written records of the Rajpurohit community for his bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice. His name is preserved in the Khyat of Tinwari Thikana and the Rajpurohit Jati ka Itihas as a symbol of the martial tradition of the Sewad Rajpurohits, who served not only as religious guides but also as warriors and statesmen of the Marwar kingdom.
