Roop ji Daviyal
Roop Singh Ji Davyal Rajpurohit of Karola, Jalore.
When Rup Ji received news that butchers were taking cows away, he had to go to protect the cows. Near Dhaner, there was a Rajput village called Kotda. When the Rajputs saw Roop Ji riding with his four brothers on horseback, they mistook them for dacoits and became frightened. Roop Ji then told the Rajputs, “Do not fear, come with me to save the cows.” But the Rajputs refused and did not accompany him.
Roop Ji, brave as a lion, confronted the butchers alone. He killed three of them, but during the battle, a spear pierced his body. The remaining butcher, frightened, fled and left the cows behind. Roop Ji, using his turban, tied the wound and brought the cows back. While passing through the Rajput village of Kotda, he cursed the Rajputs with blood in his words, saying: “No Rajput lineage shall remain in this village.”
He then returned to his village Karola. When he removed the spear from his body, he sacrificed his life. On the seventh day after his death, even his loyal horse gave up her life at the same spot.
Today, a chhatri (memorial) exists in Karola village. Though Roop Ji was a Rajpurohit, it is the Rajputs in and around Karola — a region now largely populated by Rajput families — who maintain and care for the memorial
