Panchlod
The Panchlor (पांचलोड़) clan is regarded as one of the ancient lineages within the Rajpurohit community of Marwar. According to traditional belief, the clan traces its origin to the Agnikunda (sacred fire-pit) of Maharishi Vashistha, sharing this sacred origin with the Rajguru and Jagarwal clans. This Agnikund tradition signifies a divine and ritualistic emergence, often associated with priestly and martial responsibilities in early Rajput polities.
Historically, the Panchlor clan served as Rajpurohits to the Pratihara rulers of Mandore, an important early center of power in Marwar. Their role extended beyond ritual duties to advisory and socio-political functions within the royal court.
Among the prominent figures of the clan, Shri Kripaldeoji Panchlor holds a distinguished place in oral traditions and historical memory.
Shri Kripaldeoji Panchlor served as the Rajpurohit of Nahad Rao Parihar, a Pratihara ruler of Mandore. The clan’s Ishtdevi, Gajan Mata, was also revered as the tutelary deity of the Parihar rulers.
According to local tradition:
Following this divine event:
Over time, Dharmadhari evolved into a प्रमुख धार्मिक केंद्र (major religious seat) of Gajan Mata in Marwar and a central place for the Panchlor clan.
In later centuries, branches of the Panchlor clan migrated to the Siwana region, where they became Rajpurohits to the Bhayal branch of the Parmar rulers, who governed Garh Siwana.
One of the most notable figures from this period was Shri Premalji Panchlor, who served as Rajpurohit in the court of the Bhayal rulers.
According to records preserved in the bahis (traditional registers) of the Raoji of Chawanda Thikana:
Charan chronicles celebrate Shri Premalji Panchlor for both वीरता (valor) and दानशीलता (generosity).
A poetic account narrates that:
He is described as a descendant of Veeramji of the Parashar gotra and is praised as a “दाता” (great donor), worthy of the highest honor.
Over different periods, the Panchlor clan received several jagirs from various ruling dynasties, including the Pratiharas, Parmars (Bhayal), and Rathores.
Major Jagirs include:
Notably, Dharmadhari was initially granted by the Pratihara rulers of Mandore and was later reaffirmed under Rathore rule, continuing the clan’s association with the estate.
The Panchlor clan represents a synthesis of priestly authority, martial association, and regional influence in Marwar’s history. Their long-standing service to multiple ruling dynasties highlights their adaptability, loyalty, and importance in the socio-political framework of Rajasthan.
The Panchlor clan is considered one of the oldest Rajpurohit lineages, and further historical research is ongoing to uncover more details about its past. Contributions, documents, and oral histories are welcomed for this effort.
