Fondar
The Fondar (also written as Fauondar) clan is a distinguished and ancient clan of the Rajpurohit community of Rajasthan. It is historically regarded as a subclan of the Udesh clan group and served as the Rajpurohits of the Deora Chauhan rulers of the Sirohi State.
The clan is known for its long tradition of religious authority, military bravery, sacrifice, and service to Rajput states, particularly in the regions of Sirohi, Marwar, Mewar, Pali, and Barmer.
According to traditional and clan records:
In Vikram Samvat 1125, the ancestors of the Fondar clan founded the villages of:
Nohra
Badla (Vadla / Badala) near present-day Shivganj in Sirohi district, Rajasthan
On Vaishakh Vad 15, a grand temple of Thakur Ji (Krishna) was constructed in this region.
At that time, Faujaraj Ji Udesh was the most prominent figure of the clan.
Faujaraj Ji:
Was a brave warrior
A deeply religious Rajpurohit
And an influential leader of his time
The Fondar Rajpurohits were not only religious guides but also military and political protectors of the region.
Due to continuous border and territorial disputes with neighboring feudal chiefs, the region remained in a state of conflict.
Eventually:
A major war took place
Many warriors attained martyrdom
Several satis occurred
After heavy losses, the descendants of Faujaraj Ji were forced to abandon (Gadotra) the villages of Badla, Kana Kolar and Nohra
Even today, ruins and remains in that area are said to testify to this historic conflict.
According to clan tradition:
The name “Fondar” originated from an ancestor named Fodar Ji, who was known for having a large family and dominance in their region.
Thus:
The clan came to be known as Fondar
Historically, it is accepted that:
The Fondar clan emerged from the Udesh clan group
The main ancestral village of the clan was Badla (Vadla) near Shivganj, Sirohi.
Here, the clan worshipped Amba Mata as their Kuldevi (clan goddess).
After leaving Badla:
On the morning of Basant Panchami, near the Basteswar (Basteshwar) Mahadev temple, the clan founded the village of Basant in present-day Pali district.
In Basant:
Chamunda Mata was accepted as the Kuldevi
Charbhuja is worshipped as the Gram Devta (village deity)
Even today, Chamunda Mata is widely worshipped in many villages of this region.
After leaving Badla–Nohra:
The Rana of Mewar granted the Fondar clan the jagirs of:
Septawas
Basant
(in present-day Pali district)
Later, the Rathores of Marwar granted:
Arthandi jagir in Barmer district
Earlier:
Kana Kolar and Badla were also jagirs of the Fondar Rajpurohits during their service to the Deora Chauhans of Sirohi.
