Rajawat
The Rajawat is a notable sub-clan of the Rajpurohit community, known for its distinguished service in diplomacy and governance during the medieval period. The clan traces its origins to Raj Singh Ji, a respected noble and statesman of the 16th century.
Raj Singh Ji rose to prominence during a turbulent period marked by the conflict between Rao Maldev Rathore of Marwar and the Afghan emperor Sher Shah Suri. In the Battle of Giri-Sumel (1544), Rao Maldev's army was defeated by Sher Shah Suri, despite a valiant resistance by his commanders Jaita and Kumpa. Following this significant defeat, Sher Shah advanced into Marwar territory.
To stabilize the region and negotiate peace, Raj Singh Ji acted as a diplomatic mediator between the two powers. His negotiation efforts were instrumental in reducing hostilities and preserving the interests of both parties.
In recognition of his exceptional diplomatic skills, Sher Shah Suri granted Raj Singh Ji 84 villages as jagirs (land grants). Additionally, Sher Shah bestowed upon him the prestigious title of "Sona Naresh" or "Sona Navish", a mark of royal favor symbolizing wealth, brilliance, and high nobility.
The Rajawat sub-clan gained prominence due to the wisdom and political acumen of Raj Singh Ji. The lands granted by Sher Shah laid the foundation for the clan's long-standing influence in the region. Over the centuries, the Rajawats remained a respected aristocratic lineage in Rajputana, contributing to administrative and military leadership in various princely states of Rajasthan.
